Buyers have shown overwhelming enthusiasm for the Brahman breed and the greater beef industry throughout the 2016 Rockhampton Brahman Week sale and a record top price of $150,000 was the icing on the cake.
The sale wrapped up today with 822 bulls selling for an overall average of $11,777. Red bulls completed the sale with 322 sires averaging $12,327 while 490 grey bulls sold to average $11,374.
Day three showcased the remaining portion of red bulls on offer and buyers flocked to the stands to continue presenting fierce competition across a consistent run of top quality sires.
Selling agents, buyers and vendors alike witnessed a thrilling sale when Jim and Bonnie Besley, Bungarribee, Barmoya, sold Bungarribee Imrand 2147 for $85,000 to the Radel family, Kandoona Stud, Injune.
The bull took the top price title from Peter and Joy Newman’s grey bull Rathlyn N Falcon 11697 which sold for $80,000 to Kelvin and Margaret Maloney, Mt Coolon, Kenilworth, on day one.
The CQLX arena reached fever pitch later in the afternoon today when the Johnson family, Grafton, sold polled sire Jomanda El Toro 802 for a record price of $150,000 to Darren and Sue Kent of the Ooline Brahman Stud, Goovigen.
Speaking on behalf of the Johnson family, Colin Johnson said despite there being considerable talk and “hype” about the bull it was a “surreal feeling to make that sort of money.”
Australian Brahman Breeders Association general manager John Croaker said the record price beat the previous top of $90,000 set in 2006.
