EUKEY's Bill Bonner has made it two in a row, exhibiting the grand champion pen of George and Fuhrmann's steer show and sale in Warwick today.
Like last year, the grand champion pen of 100 day grain fed Charolais cross steers were the previous year's champion pen of feeder steers.
"That's a great refection of this competition and I think quite remarkable that in both years to champion feeder steers from the year before have gone on to win the champion heavy weight class," Mr Bonner said.
"These Charolais cross cattle grow into magnificent animals that weigh like lead."
The winning 700kg steers sold to Teys Australia for 348.2c/kg to return $2437/head. They were bred by Brad and Christine Williamson, Ballandean, using Palgrove bulls. The steers were fed in Geoff Willett's Maydan Feedlot at Warwick.
The second placed heavy grain fed Santa/Black Simmental-cross steers shown by Harry, Will and Tom Grayson were also last year’s second placed feeder steers.
Evan and Lesley Peterson, Possum Station, Killarney, had the champion pen of domestic feeder steers. The 3852kg Santa steers were bought by Mr Bonner for 417.2c ($1609), who has his eye on the 2017 competition.
This year's champion heavy feeder steers were also pen of Charolais cross exhibited by Mike and Sharyn Benn, Warwick. The 18 month old steers had been running on oats at Dalveen. They were bred by Casino producers Paul and Jenny Fuhrmann and bought by the Benn's at the Casino weaner sales. The 505kg steers sold to Smithfield Feedlot for 377.2c to return $1905.
Dan Stenzel, Cambooya, was awarded the blue ribbon for the grass fed heavy weight class with a pen of Drougtmasters. The 654kg steers sold to JBS for 385.2c to return $2192.
Maugan Benn and his brothers Mitchell and Miles and sister Brittney exhibited the champion pen of supermarket steers. The 534kg Angus/Limousin-cross sold to Nolan Meats for 360.2c to return $1923.
