She may live hundreds of kilometres distant from many of her clients but the work of Longreach grazier and personal trainer Joy McClymont has been recognised as inspirational with the announcement that she is the Queensland winner for Fitness Australia’s 2016 #ActiveAchievers awards.
Joy was selected for the award, which recognises outstanding work that fitness trainers and instructors do to help their communities live a more active, healthy lifestyle, from 1300 nominations around the state.
It means she’s now in the running for the prize as national #ActiveAchievers winner, which will be announced at the Fitness Australia’s Awards Dinner at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on October 14.
The recognition has been gratifying for Joy, and she hopes it means that the efforts being made by people under the care of her Off the Track Training get recognition too, to spur them on to further efforts.
“It was a lovely feeling, to think that what I do is recognised on a wider scale,” she said. “It all helps my message that you can achieve fitness wherever you live, that distance is no barrier.”
One of her clients is Wendy Hick, who lives hundreds of kilometres away, outside Mount Isa, and who is supported remotely via podcasts, teleconferences and printed materials, the basis of one of four programs Joy offers.
She described Joy as positive and empowering during a time of drought.
“She gave me an outlet for hope through exercise.”
Some 1500 people from all over Australia have been touched in some way by Jo’s work as a personal trainer since she started eight years ago.
In that time she’s developed a holistic approach to her work, saying that fitness by itself doesn’t make a difference, adding nutrition and motivation aspects to the mix.
Fitness Australia CEO, Bill Moore said the awards represented everything that is good about the industry.
