First of all they were worried creeks might cut people off and stop their event from going ahead, and in the end 50 people were marooned at the gun club for Sunday night, but no-one was complaining at the Tambo Clay Target Club’s annual two-day shoot.
Good rain in the Barcoo River headwaters on Thursday saw the river cut access to the sports complex for a few hours on Friday but organisers and competitors alike were able to make their way across late in the afternoon.
A total of 72 shooters from across Queensland – from Mackay to Cloncurry and south to Grandchester and west to Toompine – along with competitors from Warren, Brewarrina and Maitland in New South Wales, and others from South Australia, eventually loaded up on Saturday morning for a weekend of friendly competition.
Even when there was 30mm of rain on Saturday night and the Barcoo began rising fast, 50 shooters risked being land-locked to stay on and complete the program.
