A pen of eight quality Gyranda-bred Santa Gertrudis steers sold for 252c/kg to return a healthy $2534/head, all in the name of generosity, and to support a worthy cause at Dalby Saleyards.
The steers were part of the Queensland Country Life and the Santa Gertrudis Breeders Association ‘win a pen of steers’ competition, and were generously donated by Nikki and Peter Mahony, Gyranda Santa Gertrudis Stud, Theodore.
The winners were Robert and Maree Ryan, Kelor Downs, Wandoan, who couldn’t make it to the sale as they were having cattle delivered.
The steers were fed for 100 days by the Morgan family of Kurrawong Feedlot, Bowenville, with the feeding service donated at no cost. They entered the Kurrawong Feedlot at 455kg and gained 2.25kg/day over the 105-day feed regime, to finish at 720kg/av.
They were bought by Brad Stenzel Marcelford Meats, Ipswich, who enjoyed supporting the cause, and paid about 10c above the grid to support the cause.
Half the proceeds will go to Robert and Maree Ryan, and the balance donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
This is the second time Nikki and Peter have supported the cause since taking over the family business.
The Mahony’s are strong supporters of the RFDS, as Nikki knows first hand how valuable its service is.
“I was urgently flown from Theodore to Rockhampton for an emergency cesarean with our youngest child Dominic,” Nikki said.
On hand to see the steers sell was RFDS Community Fundraising Co-ordinator, Janine Gardner, Brisbane.
“With cattle prices being as great as they are, this is a very generous gesture from the Mahonys,” Janine said.
“We acknowledge the support of all the sponsors involved.”
John Warlters Qld/NT Business manager for Fairfax Media, said Queensland Country Life had been committed to this competition since inception.
“We support the Royal Flying Doctor Service at every opportunity,” he said.
