This week I attended the Weengallon Pink Ladies Day.
For those of you who have been hiding under a rock, the Pink Ladies Day is an annual fundraiser raising awareness for breast cancer, and specifically raising funds that go towards maintaining a breast cancer nurse in the area.
It’s always a great day, and this year I was able to share it with my mother and a few other wonderful people – 600 other people to be precise.
This year I sat with the Clayfield College table.
I was able to meet several other mothers with daughters who will be boarding at the same time as my own daughters.
It was a fantastic networking opportunity, and putting some names to faces was an incredibly satisfying and calming experience for me.
Aside from networking, some of the other things I most love about the day are:
1. The shopping: It’s one of the few days of the year that The Farmer is ‘okay’ with me spending money.
Supporting local/Australian businesses is acceptable, plus I usually bring him home chocolates or something else small to let him know I thought of him (albeit briefly) during the day.
2. The socialising: Women travel from far and wide for the occasion, and I often meet up with friends I haven’t seen in ages. I also love meeting new people (often many of whom know The Farmer in one form or another). Throw in some ‘pink bubbly’ and cheese and crackers and almost all of my boxes are ticked!
3. The auction: This is especially funny after you throw in above mentioned ‘pink bubbly’. This year was one of my all-time favourites. The drinks have been flowing freely for a few hours and people are pumped to be bidding on items and contributing towards the fundraising part of the day. Steve (the auctioneer) and Sally (the emcee) do a fantastic job ensuring things run smoothly and keeping the audience laughing.
4. The guest speaker: I packed tissues before I packed lipstick this year. Last time I attended I was unprepared. Pam Schramm spoke of her personal experience with breast cancer. She was insightful and inspiring.
5. The food: It is always superb! This year didn’t disappoint. I have learned from previous years to wear comfortable clothing, because the day is long, and the food and beverage intake is consistent!
After many hours of catching up with old friends, and making new ones, I left with arms full of bags and souvenirs, and a swag of happy memories.
