Moongana J2648 left the ring with top price honours after the Moongana Santa Gertrudis Invitation Sale in Springsure this week, selling to Eyriewald Santa Stud, Aramac, for $11,000.
Eyriewald stud overseer Mark Bradshaw said at just 22-months-old, the 902kg Moongana J2648 was his pick before the sale began and he was happy with the final price.
“I just wanted one bull to put with the stud heifers - he’ll go in, in a couple of months time, with the maiden heifers,” he said.
Eyriewald runs a breeding herd of 400 stud cows and Mr Bradshaw said he hoped J2648 would deliver some solid new genetics.
“(I picked him) for his muscling and he’s got a good, tidy, clean sheath which is something we struggle with in the poll bulls,” he said.
J2648 boasted an EMA of 118sq cm and a scrotal measurement of 41cm.
The sale achieved a 97 per cent clearance rate under the hammer but successfully sold to 100 per cent after the sale concluded.
Sharing the second top price of $10,000, Moongana J2656 sold to Jeff Hyden, Rolleston, weighing 850kg and boasting a scrotal measurement of 36cm.
Also at $10,000, Moongana J2548 was the complete package of meat, muscle and fertility weighing in at 920kg with an EMA of 118sq.cm for buyers BH and DC Baker.
The sale grossed $466,500 and averaged $6760 including bulls sold after the final hammer.
Moongana’s Cyril Gauld, Bethlee, Drillham, said he expected a higher top price.
“There was no real big top money like we had last year but it was solid from start to finish,” Mr Gauld said.
The volume buyers of the sale were Hinman Pastoral, Gogango, and Mervyn Zahl, Alpha, each buying eight bulls under the hammer.
Hinman Pastoral’s eight bulls were joined by a ninth purchased after the sale for a buyer average of $6277.
Hinman Pastoral’s top priced bull was 836kg 24-month-old Moongana J2576 purchased for $9000.
Mr Zahl paid an average of $5875, topping at $8000 for Moongana J2572, a 24-month-old sire with an EMA of 127sq cm and weight of 796kg.
Also buying big numbers were the Zahl family from Balmy Hills, Springsure, who bought four bulls for an average of $7375.
Mr Hyden, Rolleston, not only bought the equal second top priced bull, but purchased a total of four bulls for an average of $8125.
Ken Copping, Mt Sunlight, Rolleston, went home with three bulls averaging $4000, including two from guest vendors Tee Vee stud who offered 10 bulls.
My Gauld said he appreciated the commercial support at the sale.
