REGATTA Hotel executive chef Anthony Fullerton took time out from his busy schedule to help celebrate the Royal Queensland Show’s industry leading Paddock and Palate competition on Tuesday.
Anthony, who oversees the Regatta’s cruisine including its famed Boatshed steak house, prepared a barbecue lunch at David and Prue Bondfiled’s Palgrove Stud at Dalveen.
The Bondfield’s winning pen of six Charolais/Angus-cross steers in the 100 day fed section had an average daily gain (ADG) of 2.95kg, just ahead of Yulgilbar Pastoral Company’s Santa Gertrudis/Charolais-cross which averaged 2.9kg.
Yulgilbar won the 70 day class for the second year in a row, with their pen of Santa Gertrudis/Angus-cross at 3.27kg/ADG.
The highest individual weight gain award in the 100 day section went to Bassingthwaighte and Co for their Santa Gertrudis/Charolais-cross which had an ADG of 3.30kg. Yulgilbar had the highest individual weight gain in the 70 day section with a Santa Gertrudis/Angus-cross at 3.74kg/ADG.
The Paddock to Palate competition is the richest of its kind in Australia with $45,000 in prize money on offer.
This year the competition attracted 770 head of cattle which were fed in Mort and Co’s best practice Grassdale Feedlot near Dalby.
The Regatta Hotel has purchased the prime cuts from the six top animals which will be sold through its famed Boatshed steak house. Meat from all of the other cattle in the competition will be sold through the Super Butcher outlets in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, marketing under the Royal 100 brand.
The three phased competition now moves to the second phase: a carcass competition, followed by an MSA eating quality competition.
The overall winners will be announced during Ekka at a special Paddock to Palate Competition awards presentation breakfast.
