Gyranda donates steers to worthy RFDS cause

This year’s pen is donated by Nikki and Peter Mahony, Gyranda Santa Gertrudis Stud, Theodore.

The steers will be fed for 100 days by the Morgan family of Kurrawong Feedlot, Bowenville, with the feeding service donated at no cost. They entered the Kurrawong Feedlot, Bowenville at 455kg and are gaining in excess of 2kg/day over the 100-day feed regime.

When sold, half the proceeds will go to the winner of the competition with the balance donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The competition will be drawn on August 25, and the steers sold on September 7, by GDL at the Dalby saleyards, free of commission charges.

This is the second time at Nikki and Peter have supported the cause since taking over the family business.

Aged between 18 and 19 months, the steers represent a mix of the Gyranda stud and commercial genetics. 

Both Nikki and Peter are big supporters of commercially relevant competitions to promote their Santa Gertrudis genetics.

More recently Gyranda steers dominated the weight gain section in the Callide Dawson Carcase Competition, with steers achieving the best average daily weight gain of 3kg/day. Their steers also have had great success in the RNA Paddock to Palate competition.

The couple are also strong supporters of the RFDS, as Nikki knows first hand how valuable its service is. 

“I was urgently flown from Theodore to Rockhampton for an emergency cesarean with our youngest child Dominic,” she said,
