The confidence expressed in the Australian beef industry has certainly flowed on to the seedstock industry with 1091 stud cattle nominated to compete at this year’s Royal Queensland Show.
RNA beef cattle committee chairman, Gary Noller, said it was pleasing to see numbers return to previous levels.
“With 28 breeds represented, some of the best seedstock in the country will compete in the stud cattle judging ring,” Mr Noller said.
The stud judging will take place over three days.
On Thursday, August 4, the Santa Gertrudis leads with a massive 179 head to be paraded before judge Ivan Price, Moongool, Yuleba.
Andrew Bassingthwaigthe, Yarrawonga, Wallumbilla will sort through the 82 head of Angus, while Matthew Kirk, Gayndah, will tackle the 79 Droughtmasters.
King Island Angus breeder, Andrew Raff returns to his home-state to judge the 64 nominated Simmentals, while Northern Territory cattleman Colin Brett will officiate over 54 Brahmans, and then tackle the Brafords.
John Mercer, Kandanga Valley will sort through the 22 Speckle Park and 11 Bazadaise, while Steve Crowley, Tycolah, Barraba, NSW will officiate in the Red Poll ring with 15 head.
Brad Hanson from Moura will judge the 39 head of Brangus, followed by 20 Gelbvieh, and Gavin O’Brien, Orange, NSW will judge the the seven Simbrahs, and 11 Blonde d’Aquitaine.
Breeds judged on Friday, August 6 include 107 head of Charolais officiated by David Bondfield, Palgrove, Dalveen, while Gavin O’Brien, will judge the 75 Limousins.
Graham Brown, RSVP Droughtmasters, Proston will tackle the 49 nominated Murray Greys, followed by 17 Square Meaters.
Guy Lord, Walcha, NSW will officiate over the 61 nominated Red Polls.
Also from Walcha, NSW, Jock Laurie, will sort through 61 Herefords.
Steve Crowley will judge the 19 Shorthorns and the eight South Devon.
New Zealand president of the Red Devon Breeders Association, Karen Schumacker with tackle the 40 Devons.
Andrew Raff will separate the four Senepol, followed by the four Romagnolas nominated.
Following the completion of the large breeds judging on Friday afternoon, the massive supreme interbreed will be judged by South Australian cattleman, Tom Baker, Woonalee, Millicent.
Mr Baker will select the supreme interbreed champion female, bull, and interbreed pair.
An additional crowd pleaser will be the people’s choice interbreed pair that will be judged by the crowd from a app downloaded on their smart phone.
This is an initiative of Paul Cottrell, and his son Alec and daughter Candice.
The Cottrells have been long-standing family stewards at the RNA, and will provide the $250 award for both the people’s choice bull and female.
The compact breeds will be judged on Friday August 12 starting at 1.30pm.
Graham Brown will officiate in the Ausline ring with 10 head, followed by the 11 head of Dexters.
Karen Schumacher will judge the 27 Australian Lowlines that have been nominated.
