A CHANCE meeting at World Brahman Congress in Rockhampton in 2002 left a lasting friendship between Australian Gulf cattle producers Tammy and Barry Hughes and Texan cattleman, Ted Aven.
Ted was back in Australia for the 18th World Brahman Congress last week and jumped at an invitation to spend time with Tammy and Barry and see their cattle operation first hand.
“I really like what I see – and while the drought in the Gulf country is devastating – it was pleasing to see how Brahman cattle handle and adapt to it,” Ted said.
“I knew I was in the outback, but it is good grazing land and there is some rolling country that reminds me of country in the US.”
While Ted was impressed with the Congress commercial cattle show and sale, he said it was disappointing to see the Australian cattle market lower by 10 to 20 per cent on US prices.
“And the great common denominator to the Congress is the friendships built of the back of the Brahman around the world,” he said.
