It’s the stuff dreams are made of.
A couple of beef producers from Yuleba buy an unknown filly for just $2500 at the Magic Millions only to see her rack up $190,000 in prize money in her first five starts.
This weekend, the owners of Sold for a Song, Ivan and Ian Price, Moongool Charolais and Charbray Stud, Yuleba, will be watching on as the three-year-old attempts to win the Fred Best Classic at Doomben to book a place in the Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben on June 4.
Ivan Price said it had been exciting watching the filly develop under Toowoomba based trainer, Kevin Kemp, over the past year.
“We didn’t go to that Magic Millions (in 2014) to buy a cheap horse – we just wanted to buy the horse we liked and she happened to only cost $2500," he said.
Mr Price said he knew he was on to a good horse after her first start at the Sunshine Coast.
“She won the maiden that day and was paying $30 to one,” he said.
“It was a very strong field so it was great to see. From there she went straight to Brisbane and on her third start she won the Listed Golden Edition. She then had a spell and then came back and ran in the Listed Nick Dittman Handicap, where she was ridden by Mick’s son, Luke. She ran second in that.”
Luke Dittman will saddle up to ride Sold for a Song again in tomorrow’s Fred Best Classic.
When asked what he liked about the filly, trainer Kevin Kemp said “there’s nothing I don’t like about her”.
“She’s a beautiful looking filly – not too big and just beautifully well mannered. I wish I had a dozen like her – or even just one more like her.”
Both Mr Kemp and Mr Price said Sold for a Song liked to come home fast in a race.
“She seems to like to take it easy early and comes home with a big powerful sprint,” Mr Kemp said.
“You always need to have a bit of luck on your side when they do that so hopefully we’ll have it on our side on tomorrow.”
Sold for a Song was bred at the Burwood Stud and was sired by Collate out of Buena Chava.
