Access to ongoing, accessible and quality health care is a big challenge for people living in rural and remote parts of Queensland. An innovative model of care is seeking to address this issue by providing General Practitioner (GP) access in areas of need. Dr Alanna Sandell, based at North Blackwater General Practice, spends one and half days per week consulting communities at the Gemfields and Capella in central Queensland. “Neither of these communities have a resident GP so by providing these services, we are really supporting health outcomes for people who would otherwise have to travel long distances to see a doctor,” Dr Sandell said.
“I think it’s really important for people who are more geographically isolated to have accessible health care as distance is a huge barrier to receiving care.” Dr Sandell was placed in central Queensland in 2014 and believes rural careers are deeply fulfilling. “You get a real sense of community and a sense that you are helping people in need. I love it.”
