Doctors undertaking advanced skills training in anaesthetics have been given a head start in Toowoomba this week.
The Rural Generalist Pathway’s Anaesthetic Introductory Program, co-ordinated by the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service’s Cunningham Centre, is being held at the Toowoomba Hospital from Monday 18 January to Friday 22 January.
The five-day program is aimed at giving doctors, who aspire to a rural medical career in anaesthetics a comprehensive introduction to their training.
“The five-day workshop is aimed at giving workshop attendees more confidence as they begin their training in rural facilities across the state,” Director of Rural Generalist Training Dr James Telfer said.
“The program comprises various practical elements and theoretical skills, and concludes with a formal assessment.
“Representatives from different medical companies will also attend to give specific training in relation to anaesthetic equipment.
“The skills these doctors receive will further support anaesthetic services in rural areas in the future.”
Sixteen registrars from across the state are taking part in the program at the Toowoomba Hospital’s Medical Education and Training facility, the Cunningham Centre.

The Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway (QRGP) is a state-wide medical workforce initiative of Queensland Health. The program is delivered by the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service. It provides a supported pathway for junior medical officers to a career in rural and remote medicine.
