A castle in Queensland’s far north has taken alternate living to another level, with modern concepts tossed aside, and medieval-themed living alive and well.
The 30 McGidigan Road, Ravenshoe, property was built by an ex-armour maker, who used the castle as a museum and botanic gardens, which attracted busloads of visitors, serving scones and tea among the medieval features.
The property named Vine Castle is up for sale by its current owner, who is passing on the keys – and crown.
Owner Dina Glass moved into the property 12 years ago, which she had lived in for most of the time.
“I bought the place from the person who built it,” Glass said.
“I love medieval-themed things like archery and horse sports, so it was perfect for me and will be perfect for anyone who likes that sort of thing.”
What it lacks in modern style, it makes up for in unique features, she said.
“There is a shield built into the floor, which is impressive.
“There is also a candelabra that you can pull out from the ceiling by a rope.
“When I first moved in I would constantly find new and interesting things in every corner I looked.”
Medieval-themed parties were always on the agenda.
“We’d always host the parties, because everyone would want them at our place,” she said.
“So, I’d dress up all the time in medieval clothes.
“It would be perfect for a murder mystery-style party too.”
The home has a consistent medieval theme throughout, with no room spoiling the reality that it’s almost 2016.
“Between the two towers there are battlements, [which] is perfect to play bagpipes at midnight from,” Glass said.
Atherton realty estate agent Suzey Whitby said the property is “one of a kind”.
“It really feels like you are in a castle,” Whitby said.
“It’s draws people in because of its uniqueness, but it’s really aimed at a specific buyer.”
The property sits on one hectare and has a permanent creek in front of the property, which acts as the castle’s moat.
