Amidst the terror and tragedy that surrounds us, Queenslanders have something of terrific importance to celebrate. We are seeing action and gaining momentum toward gender equity. I chose to celebrate that fact this week rather than International Men’s Day.
This action is not just words spoken for the media and enquiries made to be filed away, but the beginnings of a cultural shift that seeks to value the contribution women make to our world – in families, government, businesses, organisations and communities.
The people in the positions of power that we have chosen as our leaders are making a tangible stand to lead us to a new future, where equality is the new normal. Where women who wear lipstick can also run businesses or be on boards and are equally valued if they choose the role of raising the next generation. Where women can be the farmer not just the farmer’s wife, if that’s what they want to be. Where these same women are not blamed for ‘inviting’ domestic or sexual violence into their lives. Where they can enjoy employment and economic opportunities similar to those enjoyed by men, and comfortable retirement with superannuation accounts better reflecting their contributions to society throughout their younger years.
Make sure that as a rural, regional and remote Queenslander you take the opportunity to have your say in the Queensland Women’s Strategy survey by December 11 through the Office for Women’s online survey or by sending in your written feedback.
