IN the past 15 years thousands of coal seam gas wells have been drilled in the Powder River Basin – home to the United States’ biggest coal deposits. For local ranchers, it meant a share in rich royalties – if some interruptions to their agricultural operations. But now gas prices have tanked, mining companies are backing off and ranchers are dealing with the legacy. Canberra correspondent Colin Bettles reports.
