OVER 170 school boys from around Queensland converged on Brisbane last weekend to take part in the 11-12 Rugby State Championships.
Teams from far north Queensland, central Queensland and the Darling Downs battled with five teams from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast over the three-day event.
The eventual winner was Met East, which flogged other teams by up to 60 points. Underdogs, Capricornia, however, gave them a turn in the first half of their pool game, allowing Met East just one try.
In the end, they went down 28-0.
Capricornia and Darling Downs met in the first game of their tournament, with the latter winning 32-0.
The central Queensland side covered the largest geographical area in the competition, with players from Rolleston, Tieri, Emerald, Mackay, Blackwater, Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast.
Each week for a month, the boys travelled more than 700-kilometre round-trips to attend training.
They won their pool game against Brisbane team Met West and north Queensland’s Peninsula, and met Sunshine Coast in the play-offs for fifth and sixth on the final day.
Sunshine Coast won.
Darling Downs met South Coast in the semi-finals, but the game went to the Gold Coast team, which met Met East in the finals.
The games, held at Curlew Park, Sandgate, were played from Friday to Sunday, and are part of the Queensland School Sport tournaments.
