"ROLL on, roll on, into the dark night, leavin' all my troubles behind" - so goes the chorus of the song chosen by students of the Blackall State School, who had the pleasure of singing with country music star Troy Cassar-Daley when he played in town last Friday.
The 60 performers learnt to play and sing Troy's hit song Wish I was a Train and opened up the night with the song, a gesture that not only filled the town's Cultural Centre but touched the performer.
For the students, it was their first routine with professional musicians.
The idea came from year 11 student Zach Frost who, at the urging of his grandmother, contacted Troy through social media.
"My whole family are huge Troy Cassar-Daley fans so to get to play with him will be just awesome," Zach said before the event. "I have been practising for months."
Music teacher Fiona Ludgate said it was not often that live performers of Troy's calibre came to Blackall, and his visit plus the chance to perform came at just the right time for the drought-affected community.
"It provided some relief, if only for a night, to the mounting pressure we are all feeling due to drought," she said.
"It was a great boost to the students and the town as a whole."
Talented local vocalist Amanda Shale, a drummer and 10 guitar and ukulele players from the school, along with all the students in the primary school, joined Troy on stage for the event.
