DIESEL and dust clouds filled the air at the Biddeston Tractor Pull on Queensland's Darling Downs over the weekend.
Tractor pulls are growing in popularity across the State and this was the second time the event was held, after being washed out twice in 2013.
Event coordinator Jon Overell, Overell Transport, Biddeston, said close to 130 tractors turned out for the two day event.
A truck and car show was also held this year to provide more people with the opportunity to participate.
Mr Overell said none of the local show societies were able to provide enough distance to put the track in so he decided to take matters in to his own hands.
Id just bought this place and I said to Dale Mason, Oh well, lets have it here, he said.
In 2012 it started off with a couple of tents, a track and some tractors we brought up from Victoria, and here we are today.
Close to $7000 was raised for St Andrews War Memorial Hospital Cardiac Ward, Brisbane.
Mr Overell owns 45 tractors and 22 trucks and cars, with the majority of them restored.
One of his favourite tractors is the Red Cruiser, which is fitted with two 345 horse power [253.75kW] V8 International petrol engines.
You start it off as a hobby and it finishes as a complete addiction, he said.
A highlight of the event was five Lanz Bulldogs, which worked together to pull a 5.5 tonne sled.
The Lanz Bulldog was popular at the event, with 10 of the German tractors on display.
Dale Mason and his wife Ruth Bruhl started their business Classic Tractor Restorations, Helidon, two years ago.
They specialise in restoring Lanz Bulldogs, which makes up 60 per cent of their business.
Mr Mason said the fascination with Bulldogs was passed on to him by his father and was in his blood.
Ive been interested in Bulldogs from a very young age since the first time my father and uncle got onto them and brought one home, he said.
My brothers and I were given a Bulldog each, when we were kids and that was one of the tractors I had at Biddeston.
Many of the tractors he receives are in poor condition and have been rusting out in the paddock.
He is in the process of restoring a Super Ninety Chamberlain and will soon begin work on a 1919 Albion truck.
A complete restoration, including rebuilding the engine, panel beating, paint, and new tyres, usually takes three months.
The Lanz Bulldog was first produced in 1921, with various models produced until 1960.
Mr Mason said the Lanz Bulldog has a single cylinder two stroke diesel engine.
They only have one piston and it is about the size of your average household plastic bucket, he said.
They are about 50 horse power but if you compare them to a modern day 70 horse power, four wheel drive tractor, one of these things would pull it backwards no worries at all.
