DEMAND was "above expectations" according to GDL stud stock specialist, Mark Duthie, at the multi-breed Black Stump Invitational Bull Sale at the Blackall Saleyards on Monday.
Commercial beef producers mainly from Aramac and Mitchell districts bid strongly on selected drafts with the Charolais, Braford and Simmental breeds most popular.
“Blackall was a positive result for some vendors and considering much of the central west is devastated by drought, the Black Stump sale went better than we expected,” Mr Duthie said.
First-time vendors, Mike and Danny Lawlor, Kilkenny Charolais, Verbena Park, Taroom, sold six Charolais bulls for the leading average of $4333 with two of their bulls attracting the $5000 top money.
Mr Duthie described both bulls as "soft, moderate and thick" with the first, Kilkenny 111, going to Errol and Elly-May Moller, Edwinstowe, Jericho, and Kilkenny 208 knocked down to the Parker family, Eastmere, Aramac.
Burenda Angus manager Jonathan Schmidt sold five bulls at $3000 to the Munnaweena Partnership at Mitchell and Don McNamara, Strathgyle Brafords, Bell, sold a pair of quality bulls at $4750 each to the McKnight and Springall families, Yallamurra, Cooladdi.
Regular supporters George and Lorraine Bartolo, Carrinyah, Nebo, bought four Simmental bulls for a $2875 average and Warren Gleeson, Fairview Cattle Company, Alpha, bought two Simmentals for a $3750 average and a Kilkenny Charolais bull at $4750.
Overall the breed averages were: Angus $3207 (21), Brangus $3167 (six), Braford $4167 (three), Simmental $3175 (nine), Charolais $3654 (12), Santa Gertrudis $3167 (three) and one Droughtmaster bull at $4000.
