STORM season is fast approaching and the State Emergency Service is encouraging households to make sure they have prepared an emergency kit.
Essential items in an emergency kit include a range of non-perishable food, bottled water, torches, a battery powered radio and first aid supplies.
Toowoomba SES group leader Frank Devlin said it was a good idea to keep an emergency kit in an accessible location.
Many people had the mentality, 'It won't happen to us', but Mr Devlin said it was important to remember storms could turn up at any time and were unforgiving.
"Some of the storms can get fairly ferocious, so it's a good idea to keep one of these kits handy," he said.
Cleaning out gutters every six months and ensuring loose backyard items were secure if storms were approaching were two other ideas to minimise damage.
Mr Devlin has been with the Toowoomba SES for 25 years and said callouts ranged from leaking roofs to missing person searches.
He said there were 97 members of the Toowoomba SES and roughly 50 members came to training each Tuesday evening.
The Toowoomba SES group is in the process of completing a storm and water damage operations module to help prepare for the upcoming storm season.
