TWO children and their mother were killed when a car burst into flames after it collided with a semi-trailer west of Brisbane on Wednesday, police have revealed.
The horror crash occurred on the Warrego Highway near the intersection of Forest Hill-Fernvale Road at Glenore Grove, a town on the Darling Downs between Brisbane and Toowoomba.
Initial investigations suggest the 38-year-old woman had stopped her Nissan Pulsar on the side of the highway and was trying to pull back onto the road when she veered into the path of an on-coming semi-trailer shortly before 6.30pm.
The car burst into flames upon impact.
The children - two boys aged nine and 13 - and their mother died at the scene.
It is believed the young family was from the nearby town of Oakey.
Senior Sergeant Tom Missingham, officer-in-charge of Gatton police station, said it appeared the woman had waited for several other cars to pass before pulling back onto the highway.
"Apparently some vehicles have gone past while she was pulled over to the left and then for some reason after they've gone past she's moved out onto the road and mustn't have recognised the headlights of the truck," he said.
"It's very sad. We're just gobsmacked that crashes like this happen."
The driver of the semi-trailer, 55, was not physically injured.
