AUGUST rains proved the saviour for the vast expanse of wheat Noel Cook and his sons Kieran and Brodie grew on their three groups of properties in the Goondiwindi district this season.
The Cooks stripped an average yield of 1.8 tonnes/hectare from the 16,800ha of wheat they had planted.
"The season has been pretty tough. We were lucky we got good rain in August that boosted the crop along," Mr Cook said. "The quality has been exceptional, with very high protein. We got a fair percentage APH1 and a good percentage of APH2. And the prices are reasonable. We forward sold a fair bit of it and will keep a lot for our own feedlots."
Mr Cook said they had only sown 560ha of summer crop so far because they had missed the storms that had been in the area. If they receive some of the rains that are forecast for the next few days they are all set to put another 2800ha of sorghum in.
