Rural leaders enjoy brekky with Rabobank

Renowned agricultural commentator Sam Trethewey was among the crowd with people travelling from as far as the west coast to attend the Royal Queensland Show.

Rabobank Brisbane representative Ben Forest opened the breakfast, welcoming the young leaders.

"You are the generation that will take control of the agribusiness and the supply chain," Mr Forest said.

Mr Trethewey focused his presentation on leadership and collaboration within the rural sector.

"There seems to be a negative perception of agriculture in the media," Mr Trethewey said.

"This isn't inspiring the confidence and belief in the rural sector which we need."

Mr Trethewey was adamant there needed to be greater communication and leaders stepping forward who will place their own agenda aside for a greater good.

"We need to be learning from and sharing knowledge with other farmers.

"It's all well and good to talk about what we need but we also need to give our time to following through on our plans."

Mr Forest closed the occasion by thanking those in attendance for their contributions to agriculture, urging them to continue improving on their chosen sectors.

Proud recipient of the 2012 Rabobank Young Beef Ambassador award Sarah Barker couldn't be happier after attending a special farm management program in Melbourne.

The trip was part of the 2012 award which Sarah said bolstered her knowledge of best farm management and communication.

"My family run a beef cattle property and I live in Rockhampton so the program was a great opportunity to broaden my knowledge," Sarah said.

The five day program saw 40 young rural leaders tune up their skills with Sarah adding the event focused on rural education and perception.

"We covered things that we may not have even thought of because we're in the daily grind," Sarah said.

"I really loved the communication session and it doesn't matter what field you're in, everyone needs to be able to communicate and, hopefully, people can go back and apply it to their everyday situation."
