QUEENSLAND Country Life and the Santa Gertrudis Breeders Association have again joined forces to give readers a chance to win a pen of quality steers.
This year's pen is donated by Andrew and David Bassingthwaighte, Yarrawonga and Waco Santa Gertrudis Studs, Wallumbilla.
The steers will be fed for 100 days by Ben Morgan and family, Kurrawong Feedlot, Bowenville, aiming for the lucrative Japanese market.
The feedlot will donate its services at no cost.
When sold, half the proceeds go to the winner, and the balance donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The steers will be sold by selling agent GDL through the Dalby saleyards, free of commission charges.
The competition is in its 13th year, and over time has raised $58,817 for the RFDS. Andrew Bassingthwaighte said the pen
of ten steers had been selected from a line of 500 they had selected to finish through the feedlots.
"We were very happy to come on board, as it is a great chance to promote the Santa Gertrudis breed, while at the same time supporting a worthy cause such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service," Andrew said.
David Bassingthwaighte said that over the years the Yarrangwonga and Waco steers had performed exceptionally well in the feedlots.
"The majority of our steers are finished this way, giving us pleasing returns," David said. "The donated steers represent some of our reliable Santa Gertrudis genetics, that our stud prefixes are renowned for."
The Bassingthwaighte family will sell 150 bulls on-property at Wallumbilla on September 10.
To enter the competition, readers will need to complete the entry coupon appearing in Queensland Country Life over the coming editions.
The competition will close on Monday, August 24, and the winner will be notified by telephone.
