THE start of the second week of the Royal Queensland Show called for a shift in focus from meat to milk as the first day of dairy judging got underway yesterday.
The junior female and dry cow judging of the Holstein, Illawarra and Jersey breeds began under blue skies with each set to continue today.
Leader Holsteins, Oakey made a strong start to its showing with Leader Lavanguard Tammy taking out the champion junior ribbon.
In the Jersey section, Ardylbar Tequila Eva from the Barron family, Cambooya won the Richmond Dairies junior champion ribbon.
The Carters Ridge-based Ledger family added a ribbon to its cabinet with Riverwood Favourite winning the inaugural Harold Thompson Memorial Junior Champion trophy for the Illawarra breed.
Stewards generally agreed that numbers were on a par with last year’s entries, despite many areas suffering dry conditions.
Today will see the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Guernsey breeds come under the judges’ eyes, before the major winners compete for the supreme judging.
