Worry at Indo reduction

THE Cattle Council of Australia (CCA) says it is disappointed but not surprised that Indonesia has again lowered its beef import quota.

CCA executive director David Inall said the recent announcement confirmed a 45,000 head reduction for 2013 compared with this year.

Mr Inall said it was good that there was now clarity around 2013 volumes, so producers and exporters could at least start planning for the reduced quota.

“We respect that it is Indonesia’s sovereign right to manage their import arrangements in a manner that suits their own domestic objectives, recognising of course their much-publicised push for self-sufficiency,” he said.

“The Australian cattle industry stands ready to assist in any way we can to strengthen the trade between our two countries, particularly as Indonesia’s economy grows, with beef consumption having every opportunity to grow in accord with the burgeoning Indonesian economy.”

Shadow Federal Agriculture Minister John Cobb said it was concerning that beef export volumes from Australia to Indonesia had dropped by more than 50 per cent since the trade was suspended in June last year.

Mr Cobb said the Australian beef industry was already “shattered” by the ongoing reductions and would face further pressure from the latest cut in quota numbers.

He said he hoped Minister Ludwig was talking to Indonesia about how Australia could help them become more sustainable and keep cattle supplies up, so they weren't eating into their herd.

Mr Cobb also raised concerns about animal welfare in northern Australia’s beef herd, with the cattle bred specifically for the live export market and the region lacking alternative markets or slaughter options.

He said the cattle would have to be sold for live export or transported long distances to southern Australia, into feedlots or other feeding options, to bring them up to the required slaughter weights.

Hope Joe is proud of his acheivement because he played right into the vegan orientated animal libbers hands.

Hopefully Australia will be forgiven for cutting off the food supply so abruptly when labour is thrown out as the not soon enough coming election.

David Inall's comments are typical of CCA, fiddling while Rome burns. The blame for the Indo import reduction sits squarely on the shoulders of our imcompetent Federal Minister, Joe Ludwig. Until CCA publicly state this and the fact ESCAS is killing overseas demand for our live cattle the message will not get through. Another reason to disolve CCA and come up with a new beef industry body.

Mike,

You are so correct here.

Cattle Council won't stand up and be counted when it counts because they are prescribed goevernment officials, and they still keep trying to tell us they represent us. They need to get out of the kitchen, or as some are saying, go suck some eggs!!

What Inall hasn't said is that the Indos will not accept the ESCAS because it overrides its Sovereignty; the Indos are saying that Australia is holding them to ransom. The other aspect is, CCA are appointed and paid by the Federal Government to manage and safeguard the "industry"; well they have failed why don't they get the sack; I'm with Mike we need a new national group that’s not preoccupied with Corporatism and is not shackled to Government and not funded by Government and that actually formulates policy that is relevant to our economic future and is answerable to us not the Government..

With the knowledgeable member for Wills campaigning to BLE, is his role in forming an office of animal welfare model, to be shown to the caucus in Feb 2013, a confict of interest, and has he read comments on our TE herd going feral?

Dr Genhan Jayawardhana

''The reason cows die, rather than steers, is that feeding a calf makes a mother cow lose body condition. If the weaner is not removed many cows die in the late dry season - the worst case animal welfare scenario is where cattle are worth so little that pastoralists are forced off the land and cattle are left to fend for themselves.''

During the 2011 LE ban an affected owner was going to start mass shooting his cattle to avoid them starving to death.

If pastoralists are forced off the land who will the RSPCA and a shiny new OAW prosecute?

Recently 3686 buffalo were killed because they were destroying the nationally significant Arafura Swamp in Arnhem Land.

Jacob Bar-lew

''the numbers are much higher than anyone had anticipated.''

He also thinks Arafura Swamp Buff numbers were about 15,000, the NLC is talking about needing another 1500-2000 of these killed.

If TB- FMD, attacked a feral TE herd what would the cost to the Australian taxpayer and our tourist industry be?

Currently we have well managed cattle grazing native rangelands amongst the native wildlife.

Can the knowledgeable member for Wills answer Jo Bloomfield's 25 questions, before our TE cattle owners agree to be dictated to by a OAW?
