THE red hot Queensland store market continued its record breaking run at the Roma store sale this morning where weaner steers have sold for up to 346c/kg.
Roma agents have yarded a massive 12,000 head including the annual drafts of steers and heifers from the Kindee Cattle Company and JS Grazing, Injune.
JS Grazing principals, the Shaw family, Double J, Injune, sold 381 Angus steers averaging 275kg for a top of 346c/kg and an average of 336c/kg.
The line returned a top price of $1077/head and averaged $926/head.
Meanwhile, the Murray family, Kindee Pastoral Company, offloaded 1000 Santa Charolais Shorthorn-cross steers from their Injune and Taroom district properties. Aged eight to 10 months, the steers topped at 338c/kg at 332kg to return $1132/head.
Roma agent, Brad Neven, Watkins and Co, sold both the Kindee and JS Grazing cattle and said the results were likely to be a Queensland saleyards record for weaners.
“To stand up here and 1500 weaner steers for prices like that was just phenomenal,” Mr Neven said.
“We aren’t used to prices like that and it’s just wonderful to see for the vendors.”
“Last year those steers were making about 240c/kg so to see another 100c/kg on top of that was pretty exciting.”
Kindee Cattle Company principal, Ian Murray, said it was the best price “by a mile” that he has received for weaners in his 50 years of breeding cattle.
Jeremy Shaw said watching his family’s JS Grazing steers go under the hammer was both nerve wracking and exciting.
“The market had been so strong and we probably thought we’d get over 300c/kg for them but we didn’t expect them to average 336c/kg and to see them hit 346c/kg was pretty damn good,” Mr Shaw said.
Both Kindee Cattle Company and JS Grazing will offer the heifer portion of their weaners later today.
