ROMA agents have yarded just 5000 head for today’s Roma store sale where the short supply provided plenty of spirited buying competition.
Light weight yearling steers sold to 346c/kg and averaged between 313c and 321c while steer calves hit 362c and averaged 345c.
Medium weight yearling steers (330 to 400kg) to feed made to 326c and averaged 309c while heavy weight yearling steers to feed topped at 326c and averaged 315c.
Light weight yearling heifers returned to the paddock at up to 314c and averaged 284c.
Among those taking advantage of the strong prices was Aramac’s Dickson family who offloaded over 200 Braford steers and heifers.
Averaging 243kg, the best of the light steers reached 346c while the entire line of 106 averaged 323c to return $786/head.
The Dicksons also sold 103 heifers averaging 212kg. The heifers sold to 274c to average 258c/$550.
There to see the sale was father and son, Noel and Nathan Dickson, who travelled from the family’s property, The Lake, 70 kilometres north east of Aramac.
Noel Dickson said he would have preferred to have held the steers and heifers for another 10 months but was forced to offload them early due to continued dry conditions on his 19,000-hectare property.
“We have only had six inches [152mm] for the year which includes four inches [102mm] in January so there is not a lot of feed left,” Mr Dickson said.
“We have yellow feed for the breeders and we have taken their calves off so they should be right to go through to the end of the year with some lick.
“We are very hopeful of getting some early summer rains though.”
